Select Your Bulbs Now for Fall Planting!

Time to plant bulbs!

Bulbs are easy to grow, and no other plant group gives as much variety and pleasure to the gardener with so little effort! And if you don’t have a garden, bulbs do very well in pots and containers. They make wonderful gifts, potted up with a pretty ribbon, and a nice descriptive card to give a little care directives.

A true bulb such as a tulip or daffodil is almost a complete embryo of the plant to come, packed inside a covering of fleshy scales or layers that store the plant’s food. They are able to thrive in the most diverse kinds of soil, and are easy and need little care. Grow bulbs year-round in the garden: spring, summer, autumn, and as late as November.

Spring flowering bulbs should be planted in late autumn. Do not delay planting the bulbs any longer then is necessary, 14 days at most. Remember your bulbs want some cool, moist earth and they should be planted at least six weeks before it starts to freeze.

Some bulb varieties are quite susceptible to drying out, for example the Allium ursinum, Anemone nemerose and blanda, Eranthis, Erythronium, Fritallaria, Galanthus (snowdrops), Leucojum vernum and Lilium.

If your bulb selections contain some that dry out fast and you want to store them, keep them in a pot or bag full of peat-dust or sand until you plant them. Anemone, Eranthis and Cyclamen need, in addition to this, the treatment of being soaked in water for 24 hours prior to planting them.

Most bulbs are perennials, returning several years in a row.  Some are even naturalizing, reproducing and coming back every year. Visit us now for a great selection of bulbs!
